Maybe Tomorrow Then

Today could have been the day. That day when you would give up smoking and enrol in that gym. That day when you’d call your friends from your past. When you would cross over from the waiting-to-confess to the clean-inside. When you’d call a spade a spade and dump all this diplomacy and political correctness. That day when you would go back in the past and dig up the real dreams from your childhood and give them their rightful place, after knocking off the corporate wish-list. Today was when you could have said ‘I love you’ to those you have taken for granted and ‘goodbye’ to those you keep hanging onto only because they can swim and carry you ashore when the great flood strikes. Today, with the hours at their end, you could have done that one good deed you promised back in school. You could have, with a minimum fuss and marginal sacrifice, lived through a plastic-free day. You may not have realised your dream but you could have remembered it. You could have walked on drying leaves again, climbed a tree, kicked a stone around or played hop-scotch. You could have made it one of those days you’d remember to the end of your life. Or you could have made it one of those days you’d end with a smile, even if you forgot it tomorrow. But then you knew there was always a tomorrow at the other end of it. So you let it be any other day. Forgetting that only yesterday it was the tomorrow when you thought you’d do it all.
